Media Studies- Stop Motion Animation

During Media Studies this year, we have been learning about how to create stop motion videos and edit movies and clips. My group, Nikkita, Izac and I, made a stop motion to the song "Hidden in the sand" by Tally Hall. Here is the stop motion video we created using lego.

Poster Comparison

In English, we have been working on summarising things we see and read.

Moving to the next level of difficulty, we started looking for similarities or comparisons between texts and book covers, or between movie posters.

Another level of difficulty, we started looking for differences, or contrasts, between texts and book covers, or between movie posters.

Here’s the example I did on "Suicide Squad"

Book Cover A

Background:

A mixture of purples, blues, greens and some pinks and yellows.

Copy and paste your cover A  here:

Suicide Squad : Featured classification decisions : OFLC

Dominant Image:

I would say the dominant image is either Joker on the X painted in a blue/purple or the face made with the paint and group of people in the centre

Target Audience:

The target audience seems like people who are into action/ rebellion movies. Maybe teens or young adults.

Dominant Colours Used:

Though there are a lot of colours used I would say the most dominant are green and purple.

Font:

The font is bold and big with the title, it has uneven lettering and mixtures of colours. I would say it looks slightly rebellious.

Book Cover B

Background:

The background has greens and purples with paintings in a street art sort of style of characters.

Copy and paste your cover B here:

Suicide Squad Movie Poster (#1 of 49) - IMP Awards

Dominant Image:

The dominant image is the faces surrounding the writing.

Target Audience:

I think the target audience is people who like DC and action movies, probably teens or adults.

Dominant Colours Used:

The dominant colours are green in the background and the black for the main silhouette of the faces.

Font:

The font is bold and big with the title, it has uneven lettering and a maroon red sort of colour. I would say it looks slightly rebellious.

Compare- what is the same?

Suicide Squad : Featured classification decisions : OFLC

Firstly…

They both have the main characters in it.

Secondly…

The background is a green and purple mixed in both posters.

Next…

They both have the title in the same font.

Lastly…

Above the font, both posters have the main five actors.

Contrast- what is different?

Suicide Squad Movie Poster (#1 of 49) - IMP Awards

Firstly…

The characters in one are just artistic silhouettes and in the other it's the live action image.

Secondly…

There is a lot less purple in the one on the right.

Next…

The title is a lot smaller and a different colour in the right poster.

Lastly…

The right poster has the date the movie will be released and the one on the left doesn't.

Animal Defences Summarizing Task- Charli Buick

In 9MY English with Mr McCartney, we are learning to summarize. We have done activities focusing on summarizing such as, writing short stories and having a set amount of words to narrow it down to, reading text and summarizing it and finding information about animals defenses and writing a short summary on how they do it.

The summarizing task I'm going to share with you is the animal defenses task. Mr McCartney wrote about a few strange animals with interesting defenses and we had to highlight 6-7 key words that summarize the information about the animal. Next we had to find 3 more of our own animals and summarize information about each. I choose to work with the Sea Cucumber, Red-Lipped Batfish and the Stone fish.

Here is my summary of the Stonefish...

stonefish are the world's most venomous fish that inject venom from their fin spines that can kill an adult person in less than an hour.

From this task I learnt all about the Stonefish and improved on my summarizing ability.

Summarizing Street Art

In English with Mr McCartney, we have been learning to summarize and find meanings in things like poems and art.

My group, Alexia, Kaleb, Jordan and I looked at the art by Kevin Ledo that is located on the Crowne Plaza Building, CBD Christchurch. The artwork is called "Great Taranaki kuia" and is of Whero O Te Rangi Bailey, known to many as Poppy.

We discussed the meaning of the colours, characters, location and more.

Here is a small summary on what we came up with...

Kevin Ledo in Christchurch, New Zealand | StreetArtNews ...

The significance of the objects and character/s are?

I believe the significance of the objects and character is to show a lady ( Whero O Te Rangi Bailey ) holding something that is precious to her, its rather small and may be a flower. I think it signifies to not take advantage of the small things.

The significance of the colours used is?

The significance may be to show that she was part of the older generation, using greys, browns and blacks. I also think the yellow circle pattern above her head may symbolize that she's dead and maybe she is watching us from heaven.

What is the location of the Art work and why it's important?

The location is on the Crowne Plaza Building, CBD Christchurch. I think it is important because she was a maori from Parihaka in Taranaki, nz.

The Magpies- Dennis Glover

In 9MY English, Mr McCartney has got us to read the poem The Magpies by Dennis Glover and summarize it. Here is my summary on the story and what I feel the meaning is...

This poem is about a couple living in a farm a while ago. They got kicked out and the farm did not sell to anyone else so it’s still there. I feel the line “Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle. The magpies say.” represents the birds remaining there and doing the same thing throughout the years. I feel this poem represents how time moves on, some things change and some don't.

Here is the poem itself...

The Magpies
When Tom and Elizabeth took the farm
The bracken made their bed
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies said

Tom's hand was strong to the plough
and Elizabeth's lips were red
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies said

Year in year out they worked
while the pines grew overhead
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies said

But all the beautiful crops soon went
to the mortgage man instead
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies said

Elizabeth is dead now (it's long ago)
Old Tom's gone light in the head
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies said

The farm's still there. Mortgage corporations
couldn't give it away
and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle
The magpies say.

Bird Mascots- Charli Buick

Bird Mascots - Great Horned Owls

Resources used:
Why did I choose this bird?
I chose the Great Horned Owl because Owls are Intelligent, Flexible and Nocturnal kinda like me. I feel like if I was an Owl I'd be the Great Horned Owl because they look intimidating like I apparently do. They can be fierce predators that take out large prey such as Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons, Prairie Falcons, and other owls. Female Great Horned are normally larger than their mate and I am fairly tall so I feel I relate in that sense.

Why does this bird represent me?
I want this bird to represent me because it is tough, strong, fierce, smart and more. I love all of these qualities and I feel I represent a few of them. They're covered in extremely soft feathers to keep them warm in the winter and fly quietly when pursuing prey.

What countries can you find your bird in?
Great Horned Owls are adaptable birds that can be found from Arctic to South America. They're at home mainly in suburbia as well as in woods and farmlands. Northern populations migrate during winter, but most live permanently in more temperate climes.

How big is the bird and what special physical features does it have?
The Great Horned Owl's body is 18 to 25 inches on average and the wingspan is normally 3.3 to 4.8 feet. They can weigh 2-5.5 pounds and have a lifespan of around 5-15 years. They're best known for their large tufts of feathers on its head that look like horns. It has big cat-like eyes and brown white, gray, and black markings that look like the bark of a tree. These markings help camouflage it in the woods.

Is your bird Dangerous or Endangered?
Great Horned Owls have a stable global population of 6 million with 14% living in Canada and are protected by law. They are very powerful birds that demand and deserve respect, the most dangerous part of them is their talons. These owls' talons are said to exert 500 pounds per square inch of pressure against your skin.

Summarizing using BMENPI

Accelerated Learning in Literacy Term 3

Our class in Year 9 is looking at four main skills we will be looking
at this term to improve our literacy.  The Fab Four skills are:

1.Predicting
2.Questioning
3.Clarifying
4. Summarising

A skill that students use to improve their literacy is to be able to
summarise what they see, read, hear, view or watch.

At the start of the term, our teacher Mr McCartney got us to write
about our holidays under the heading BMEPMI - which is an acronym for
beginning, middle and end, positives, minuses and interesting.

Beginning:
The beginning of the holidays are always great. It's when I begin to do things like Stay up late,
Sleep in, Spend time with friends and best of all, Have no more school work!
During my first week of holidays I just slept in, Ate whenever and texted friends.
I have this one friend who I love to talk to but only can at 3am-6am and 2pm-6pm or 7pm due to
the fact that they live in America so they have different times they’re available.

Middle:
During the middle of the holidays I hung out with some friends and my dad. On the Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday of the second week my brother and I went to this holiday program
that my friends went to as well. With the program we did things like Stone carving, Baking,
Mega air, Swimming, Go karts and more. It was nice being able to spend time with my friend
that I don't see much anymore because he goes to Shirley Boys so we don't hang out as much.

End:
At the end of the holidays I felt sad that it was ending but kinda motivated. Since I was
motivated I finally went through and rearranged some of my room so I decided to move
some stuff around and clean out the top of my drawers and desk. I still have a few things
I need to sort through but I’ll do that another time. I don’t really like the placement of my bed
right now because on the other side of the wall is my brother's room and the bathroom so it was
loud.

Positives:
Some positives are that I got to listen to music 24/7, which I can't do normally because
of school and my mum getting annoyed by how loud I play it. I also enjoyed being able
to talk to my American friend more due to not having to work around a good sleep schedule
and school. Seeing friends and participating in the holiday program was also great, I even
made some new friends at the program that I hope to see again.

Negatives:
A few negatives to my holidays was when I forgot I still need to get a decent amount
of sleep so I stayed up late and woke up early, leaving me exhausted  the next day.
I got lazy from not having to do anything and I binged two and a half seasons of the tv series
“F.R.I.E.N.D.S”.

Interesting:
Something interesting about my holidays is for once I decided to help out around
the house and I didn't complain or procrastinate about it. I was going to go to Armageddon
Expo and that's why I did jobs to earn my ticket from my mum but I didn't go because I
randomly decided I didn't want to go last minute. Another interesting thing is my American
friend and I had an argument over who was better, Shawn Mendes or Billie Eilish, I was on
Billie’s side. She ended up sending me a parody of Shawn’s “Treat you better” saying that
Shawn was better and it was hilarious.

My original story was 520 words

Then he asked us to choose TWO sentences from each paragraph
that were the main ones for beginning, middle, end, positives, minuses
and interesting.
This is what it looked like:

The beginning of the holidays are always great.
I have this one friend that I love to talk to but only can at 3am-6am and 2pm-6pm or 7pm due

Word count: 276

Then, he told us we only had 103 words to summarize the holidays.

This is my 103 word story:

During Holidays I got to talk to my online friend that normally I only speak to at certain times
because they live in America. During the second week I went to this holiday program. I got
to spend time with my friend that I don't see much anymore.
I changed my room, I decided to move stuff around and clean the furniture
I was able to listen to music 24/7. I was lazy and binged 2.5 seasons of “F.R.I.E.N.D.S”.
My American friend and I had an argument over who was better out of two singers.
